A gentleman named Syd Field has written numerous books on screenwriting, most notably "Screenplay: The Foundations of Screenwriting." His teaching methods tend to lean toward the formulaic (boring), but it wouldn't hurt to learn the formula and then branch out from it. And you will also learn the proper screenplay format, which the Celtx software mentioned above streamlines.

Not really a book on the technical aspect of how to write a properly formatted screenplay, but the book titled "Writing A Great Movie: Key Tools for Successful Screenwriting" is easily the best book on writing drama and how to create and fashion good screenplays I've ever read.

The techniques and tips in it will definitely improve all of your stories and structures thereof by tenfold.

I highly suggest checking it out if you're interested in writing gripping screenplays.

If you know absolutely NOTHING about screenwriting -- which is what it sounds like, you might go pick up THE SCREENWRITER'S BIBLE.

I honestly think this is the best 1st book for most who want to learn about the craft... By no means should it also be your last...

After you've gotten a handle on its contents and implemented a screenwriting program like Celtx mentioned above, start getting your feet wet.

If you end up really liking this part of filmmaking, CONGRATS! Most do not... LOL.

From there, it's an even longer road to writing a coherent screenplay but it's absolutely DOABLE.

Start snagging the books that look interesting to you... Lots of great information online too. Great articles that are worth reading that allow you to learn the craft in snippets as your writing develops.

GOOD LUCK and if you need any help or direction... Just bump this thread.

EDIT: Be sure to read screenplays as well... This is probably something you should always be doing... Read one a week for 6 months and you're going to learn a lot.

These are good links to read screenplays:
