I almost got a nasty surprise with some software.

I was about to finally get the Adobe Create Suite 4 after a lot of research of which one to get. My computer cannot support the 5.5 one, so I decided to get ACS 4. However I found out that I needed to get licensed permission from the original owner in order to use it. So I canceled the order before it was too late. Is there any way to use the software without needed the original owner's permission since Adobe does not sell ACS 4 anymore? I researched it and couldn't find anyways around it, but it's hard to know all the options, since they could be full of more surprises.

buying used adobe stuff is a challenge..
you'll find lots of academic versions, I fell for one local guy who claimed to sell his "extra" enterprise licenses of CS4. The guy was legit, he just did not know what he was trying to do, he gave me back my money after he, adobe and I tried to make it work, he could not provide the ORIGINAL purchase license.

Adobe is really helpfull with licensing, and their academic pricing is really good.

FYI: My cs5.5 came with AE CS4 (for 32 bit support) you might give them a call and really explain your situation. Also with the new CS5.5 subscription model, you can rent what you need for a pretty fair price.

Okay thanks. I wanna buy a used version of ACS 4 though, or a new version, that is still not out of stock. If I find a good deal on a used version, should I call Adobe or get a license for it, before buying?

You should call adobe now, ask them about how to buy a used copy, how licenses are transferred etc. They're cool about it.

See, what happens is people upgrade and think they can sell the previous version, you cant really do that. The license the old version is migrated to the new version... however, some people WILL sell the old version without planning to upgrade, with transferring the license, its perfectly legit and supported by Adobe, there's just a right way and a wrong way.

You can set up a "my adobe" account without owning any products and start a tech support ticket \ online chat etc.

.... also, don't neglect academic pricing. All you need is a current student ID card from high school or college..

My kids are heavy into photoshop and making their own movies, no problem, completely legit for me as a father to buy Production Premium at academic price and use it for my PROFESSIONAL projects too.

I'm not so sure about that.
Academic pricing usually comes with a license for non-commercial use only.
