Hv20 mic help.

hello, i just joined, im glad i finally found a website with so many people into film..well, im pretty much a newb when it comes to filmmaking. i wanna make my first short soon..i already purchused an hv20. i want to have decent audio, so i need to know, is there any quality sounding shotgun mics, that dont require xlr...i dont wanna directly mount the mic onto the camera. im looking to do something in the lines of mounting it ona boom pole, with an extension cord from the camera, if anyone could help me with this, it would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance

The HV-20 has a mini-pin audio input, but almost all quality mics require XLR. The best option would be a juicedLink CX231 that will "step down" low impedance mics and make them compatible with the camera. It connects to your camera via mini-pin, supplies phantom power, has a real volume pots, attenuator switches and can be mounted between the camcorder and tripod. You can then get an budget shotgun like the Rode NTG-2 or the Audio Technica AT875 for shooting outdoors; and the Oktava mk-012 cardioid (get it with the hyper-cardioid capsule) for indoor usage.

Place like B&H offer packages that include the shock-mount, basic wind protection (softie), and a boom-pole. You will still need to get XLR cables - I would suggest two 30' cables as you will find that you need the extra length at some point. Get decent quality cables; you'll save money in the long run.

Alcove has the best advice.

Alternates are using a Beachtek adapter for XLR to minipin and for under $100 is the AudiaTechnica mic AT55 that goes to minipin and perfect for this camera. It's world's better than the on board mic, but not really a professional microphone.

Yup, you can use an XLR to mini-pin adapter, but only with high impedance mics like the ATR-55 (which are very prone to RF interference, especially with longer cable runs) or low impedance mics that supply their own phantom power (which are few and far between). That's why I recommend the CX231; it gives you more options/compatibility as well as superior control.
