Hows the money divided up?

I was checking out this weekend's box office gross (Moore really made out didn't he), and I was wondering how is the money divided up? As in what percent of the total gross does the distributor get, the production company, and the theater? Thanks.

It varies drastically. And it changes throughout the run.

Anywhere from 20/80 which I heard LucasFilm gets, to 30/70 for the first 2 weeks, 40/60 for the next two weeks, 50/50 for the next 6 weeks and 60/40 for the rest of the run.

The distributor usually takes 85-90% off the top until some agreed upon number is met, then it drops to 60-70% until all their costs are recouped, then 30% for the life of the film.

Yep. I agree. It all depends on how the deals were cut in pre-production. However, it's usually true that the distributors take the smallest risks and keep the largest share. This is the reason having the world's meanest media lawyer on your team is essential when getting into any major league project. It is an all too common story that the film maker can walk away not earning a penny on a highly profitable film, when the distributor has stiched them up witha deal that looked great, but basically wasn't.

The less well know the film maker the more likely they will make a poor deal.

Its for reasons like that, that I plan to stay away from Hollywood altogether ( or is the fact that i live in a town called 'Holywell' some sort of strange sign ? :))
Anyway personally I generally prefer European films like Amelie, Run Lola Run, Trainspotting etc.etc, and 99% of people that move to Hollywood just seem to waste their time when they are most youthful and creative and energetic.
(I follow Tarantinos philosophy about limp-dick directors making limp-dick films).
hmm, i should really make a new subject if im going to start ranting.

95% of what you hear about Hollywood, LA and the industry, is nonsense written by people on the outside outside of the industry.
My limited experience of LA, was that is was full of lovely people who were keen to make the best films that they possibly could. I found people only to willing to meet with me and help me pull projects together. If anything, I found it a lot easier than the UK scene where everyone is back biting over the same, poor arts funding to make films that nobody ever sees (and in most cases rightly so)

LA controls all of the major routes of English speaking distribution, without distribution film making is just a very expensive hobby.

European film making at its best is phenomenal, but so is main stream American film making. Hollywood has a thriving indie scene, you only have to look at films like Animal House and Living in Oblivion to see that they do that stuff just as well as we do.

Thanks clive.

It's nice to hear a fellow filmmaker bashing "Hollywood" It gets depressing hearing statements like:

Statistics based not on actual experience but on innuendo, conjecture and media outlets more interested in telling sensational stories.

Ya know, Lloyd - if you want to stay away from Hollywood, you aren't going to find anyone trying to force you to move or work here. It's you choice and I will respect it - as will everyone else living and working here.

Despite your statement, most of us are not wasting our time and energy - youthful or not. We are here because it's a great place to find serious, creative, passionate, dedicated people deeply committed to making movies.

It's not the ONLY place - but it sure is a great one.

I have no idea where you heard Tarantino talking about "limp-dick directors" - I can tell you from experience, that for every "limp-dick director" there are 20 directors with passion and talent, working hard to make the best film they can.

What can I say ?
Its true, everything I hear about Hollywood is bad. Everytime I hear some mega succesful film-maker talk about it its always in a negative way. They say Hollywood wastes money, they say Hollywood is full of backstabbers, they say Hollywood is about nothing but money.
Ive read and heard that stuff for years and I admit that I have been driven to ignorance.
But now I have been enlightened by someone who actually lives in Holywood !

I thankyou for your education directorik and clive and I will pass on my newfound wisdom to my friends and associates.

I 16 and I live in Wales, I have never been anywhere in the West of the world nevermind Los Angeles - so please excuse my misinformation and innocent ideals.
I hope you wont hold a grudge for this disagreement as I wish to be an active and respected member of indietalk.

Thankyou.

No grudge to be held, Lloyd.

Not even much of a disagreement. I was just pointing put that blanket statements made with no actual experience can be counterproductive in any discussion.

Media outlets never discuss the good stuff - it just doesn't interest most people.
They say Hollywood wastes money, they say Hollywood is full of backstabbers, they say Hollywood is about nothing but money.
"Hollywood" is all these things. I bet I could find a story about a business in Wales that wastes money, that backstabs people and that is all about money. But if I were to post on a message board that I would never go to Wales because 99% of the people in Wales are like that, you would correct me.

Just like there are bad people in every society, there are bad people in "Hollywood".

If you concentrate on the money wasting, backstabbing, money grubbing people you will miss so much in life. I would rather deal with the positive.
