How to Watch Movies Faster?

Okay, I know this is a goofy question (and will be anathema to any film purists who believe that movies should only be watched as the filmmaker intended). But does anyone have any advice on DVD or video software that would allow a user to watch the film at 1.5x (or more) speed? I am looking for an inexpensive (preferably free) solution. Most video players cut out sound whenever you fast forward and none that I know of allow for the user to specify playback speed (am I just not looking hard enough?). Also, I don't want to have to burn the movie from one format to another and change a playback setting that way. I want to be able to play the movie as originally prepared and only deal with the speeding up process in the software.

Any ideas on a solution (or where I might find a solution)?

Yeah powerdvd lets you go up to 32x I think.. not that you'd catch much that way mind you..

I think a lot of DVD players will do faster playback too, but dunno how smooth it would be.
