how much light?

Ok, a verrrry newbie question. I have a Canon XL2, aiming at documentary work. I am experimenting with lighting for interviews, working in an indoor space, about 11 feet by 20 feet, at night with no other luminous objects in the frame. I've been using a 500 watt tungsten floodlight bounced into an umbrella for a key and a 250 watt, same set-up, for a fill. Both lights are positioned about 7 feet from the Subject (key at 45 degrees over/up, fill just above camera). I haven't added kicker and background light yet.

Is an overall wattage of 750 a lot of light in this situation or is it minimal? I've gotten some mixed feedback on this question. Should I come down a stop, with key at 250 and fill at 125--then add the kicker and bg?

What sounds like a reasonable amount of light in these conditions? I've been reading books on lighting, learning a lot but have some very basic questions when it comes to application.

Any feedback appreciated....

MJ
