How do you make contacts in the industry?

I'm in high school and I'm working on a short film, but I'm trying to figure out the next step when the movie is done. I don't know anyone in the industry, how would I go about making contacts? I'd like to meet the right people to show my short film to and then hopefully work on another more ambitious one with a crew and such

I'm not familiar with your town of sdfsdfs, but does it have a film industry there or would moving to a different city be in the cards?

Also, when you refer to industry... are you meaning just large studio films, or the filmmaking industry in general? It's a fairly broad term, and there's a lot of filmmaking to be done outside of Hollywood.

making contacts?

In simplest terms... start working on other peoples' films. Maybe through Craigslist (some gigs are good; many are terrible) and meet people. Make a good impression & keep in touch. Rinse & repeat. Work for free; work for pay. Start getting invited to work on more gigs. Make some of your own, and call in favors. Keep working at it. Always.

Thought about film school? There's many threads on the forums debating the value of it. It works great for some people. Not so great for others. How do you feel about it? :hmm:

lol I was just typing randomly when I registered, but yea I do live in a big city with lots of film activity. And yea I'm talking about indie contacts mostly. Basically I'm hoping to find people who would be interested in working on another film with me (if they like my first one that is)

I don't like the idea of film school, but regardless I'm a year away from even being able to go to film school so it's not even a factor for me atm. i'm trying to do it totally on my own

This is how you do it. So many folks become obsessed with the idea of "I want to make my films" and ignore the education they can get working on film projects that are not their own. There are so many things that you need to learn, and watching others succeed - and fail - is the best way to learn.

"The difference between an amateur and a professional is an amateur learns from his mistakes; a professional learns from the mistakes of others."

You also need to be NETWORKED so you have favors to call in, and a reputation for hard work, discipline and creativity that will attract others.

You need to develop a ruthless desire to learn, and work incredibly hard - then you double down on that!
