How do you get inspired?

How is it you get insipred for ideas for films, if they're shorts, features, docummentaries, anything.
I mean, the one idea I have for a short I'm hoping to work on soon just sort of... came to me, I had the idea and the characters and even the motifs I was using in my head. But I can't seem to activley think of any other ideas.
Advice, tips or any similar stories on the whole needing inspiration thing?

Other times, I will just beat my head against the wall until a chunk of something falls out, and then spend the next hour or so analyzing it on paper.

See, now that's how one gets fuzzy thoughts....:D

I often find myself inspired by hearing people talk about what they can't do in film. I used to hear all the time:

"...there's no woods by my house...." Trying to remake The Blair Witch Project
"...I don't have a good camera...." Trying to remake Lord of the Rings
"...Kevin Smith did/didn't have (insert whatever here) and he made CLERKS..." Yeah, but even Kevin Smith does not make films like that anymore.

I am also inspired by what I maybe don't like in films. If you don't like the way horror films are being made, maybe you could come up with something that no one has seen before. Change all the cliches or make them really over the top....or just better-in your opinion - than the last thing you saw....

For me, I don't want to make a movie just to make a movie. I can't really sit down and think of an idea, and settle with an idea. I don't want to make a movie arbitrarily. When something happens to me that I think could be cinematic, I write it down. I just write down different things that I could see as a short film. I need to have some emotional attachment to it to make it into a movie.
