How can I build a team ?

Hi! It has been a long time since I've been on a forum so I hope I won't do too much mistakes.
I hope I am in a good place to ask this newbie question: How can I build a team?

Me and a mate are working on a project that we want big so we're looking for people to help us bring it to life. Is that make sense? Also I'm not from London (where I live) but from Paris. I don't know a lot of people here and that's why I don't know where to start to build a creative team (to work with us to finish the script and stuff) and a technique team to work with us on the shooting.

So if you have any suggestions, ideas, or if you know motivated people in London just let me know. Because I'm really clueless about it hahaha!

Cheers :D

If you've got a budget, it's pretty easy, you hire talent.

Lacking funds - as I assume you are - and probably lacking much experience, you'll need to be networked. Volunteer for other projects doing any job you can get; you'll get to see the local film crowd in action, and, more important, meet them. There are lots of very cool people out there.

BTW, when you do these small shoots, always be the guy(s) that volunteer for every crap job no one else wants. Do it fast, do it well, do it with a smile. Develop a reputation for reliability. Keep your eyes and ears open and learn; the negative lessons are sometimes worth more than the positive lessons. And network, network, network.

When the time comes for your project you'll have worked on quite a few sets, and you should have a whole bunch of contacts for all the crew positions you want to fill.

Hi Nelson – I run a London filmmaking collaborative group, where you may be able to find some help (though people are encouraged to support others in return). If you're interested, drop me an email to nick[@]theclapperbored.com and I'll add you to the mailing list.

I'm afraid I'm going to have the same problem too. I didn't plan to shoot something mine yet, I still join students' films whenever I can (students can also be very selective!). So I see how many people volunteer to such productions, even people who actually WORK in the industry. And then I ask myself, what did that student do to make all those people want to join him so much? I don't have the answer and that scares me :)

There is a reason why it scares me. Right now, I'm developing a Mobile/Web App game. I'm trying to gather a team, (mostly I need designers and artists). After seeing my game they go like, - "Wow, dude! It's great!", - and offer their help with something. I explain them what I need, and they say they'll start from today. And sometimes they do. But then... they just disappear, ignore phone calls, facebook, emails and etc. And when they answer (nearly 2-3 weeks later), they say something like, - "I had no time". After another 2 weeks they finally say "I'm out". I can't understand why, because THEY offered their help! I didn't beg them for that.

So maybe I'm a bad leader, that's the point. Then how the hell I'm gonna get a team to shoot a film???

...just some loud thinking...
