Hooligan's Valley - Day 3 (image-heavy)

What a crazy day this was! A couple of things did not go so smoothly (between a lot of rain and a Panavision camera blowing up) but we won the day.

The cast was to assemble at 5am, for makeup, then head to the outside location. The problem was... it was pouring rain by the bucketful and showed no signs of clearing up. Thunder and lightning was mixed in as well.

As they say, the show must go on... and here are some images of Day 3's shoot of Hooligan's Valley

Al Cortez was up bright and early, with his massive crate of makeup and prosthectic appliances. His able assistant Miss Pink (who declined to be photographed) was busy with prepping the zombies base tones, which Al Cortez would then layer with details and highlight/shadows.

The duo would appear later in the day at Death Fest, where another film they had created FX for was getting deserved recognition.

RJ Blaze is a pretty big guy. At 6'5" he was a great pick for leading the motley band of ragtag undead minions. While most of the other zombies had latex gashes and wounds created on the go, Mr Blaze had been outfitted with custom-molded appliances and bizarre contact lenses a few days back.

I'll see if I can find a picture of him with the makeup on. (Nyuk nyuk nyuk)

Group photo of several of the walking dead, and Al the FX guy. From left to right:

Chris Lenox, Al Cortez, Steven Richards, RJ Blaze, Joseph Buevo, and (need name.. oops)

With the main work done, it was time to head out.... and the rain was still barreling down.

Right as we were heading out the door, the DP discovered that something was wrong with the Panavision camera (stuck at 60fps). It was going to be later that evening for a replacement 16mm from the rental place, which would have effectively ended the day for us.

Luckily, one of the fellows there had a K-3 of his own... and since there was no need for sound-sync for the zombie part, we went ahead and shot on that instead.

For some very odd reason, the rain stopped and blue skies appeared the minute we arrived in Costa Mesa. Now that's a lucky break!

We needed a quick touch-up on location. A pressurised gallon container of "blood" was waiting, and we were all hosed down via the pressure-wand. That is some seriously sticky mixture they had! (Tasted pretty good... not something I'd want on my waffles for breakfast, though)

Sadly I have no piccies of us doing our thing... hard to handle a camera when liberally coated in makeup and some concoction of maple-syrup. Rest assured that I flawlessly executed "the shuffle" when the Director called action. I'd been waiting my whole life for an opportunity like this. I even had the "Uurrrggghhhh" part right!

After scrubbing down and cleaning up from the zombie shoot, we headed to the location for the following day's action. It was too late to begin filming with the replacement Panavision camera, so we unloaded a lot of rented equipment into the Salon, as well as a lot of props.

There were about 25 detached mannequin heads amongst the props... what for? Well... hmmm.

I hung most the heads here, after helping stretch a few hundred feet of power cables above the suspended ceiling. Many lights were also attached with these very clever clips.

Having a lot of experience with C-stands (well, I watched Scott Spears how-to video) I got to set up the 2k's on those.

There was a lot of lifting, lugging, and climbing. Hard work!

This alligator head was used the week before, but I wanted to show it anyway. Giant two-legged 'gator was chased down the block by the 'Gator Wrangler (hook hand) in the last post.

...and things get even weirder than that later.
