Help! Noob Marine with ?

I served as a rifleman in the USMC and did a tour to the City of Fallujah, Iraq, eversince I left I have been wanting to go back for years now. I became really close to a family that had been through alot and because of U.S. air strikes the wife of this individual had been killed... They were extremely poor and in a horrible state. I can go further but I don't want to take too much of your time... I need some direction into making a documentary film!

Thanks

Well, one of the most important things about documentary is access. If you can physically get back to that area and track down the family, then you are already well on your way.

There are multiple options from that point that break down into a couple of categories: DIY or get someone experienced excited about the project and bring them (and their gear) with you to shoot and handle sound. Both approaches work for editing as well.

A good start would be collecting any and all photos, letters, emails, stories, cell phone video from your tour, whatever and seeing what you have. Really think about their story, and how it can be told.

Search through here for threads on documentary, watch a lot of character driven documentary.

Heavy Metal In Baghdad comes to mind immediately, but only because of the location and context.

And thanks.
