Help! Canon T3i Manual Focus for DOF

I come to you guys seeking advice again. I can't figure out how to throw some stuff out of focus on the T3i. I want to achieve a shallow depth of field, and only want the actor to stay in focus on some shots. Thanks again for helping out!

135mm lens @ 4 feet isn't on a 35mm camera is it? I would think that would be just an eyeball if that were the case. Must be a smaller chip camera.

Misspoke, closer to 5 feet. At 5 feet on a FF camera it's the face filling the frame.
