Good Ideas?

Does anyone know what the industry is really looking for nowadays regarding
film ideas, scripts, and style?
I'm trying to make an admission video that has to be 10min. for NYU.
So far I've thought of some ideas, but I thought I'd ask
others first about it before going about it.
Thanks!

The Oscar nomination list probably answers your question.

Heavy tones that doesn't sparkle. If funny, it's even more tragic at the same time.

The Oscars have ten films that are nominated for best film as opposed to five (heard it on the radio). Still, the Oscars is more of a collection of Hollywood favorites than what the rest of the world enjoys. I mean, can anyone name a movie they have seen in the last decade that won an award?

I thought off the top of my head reality. Reality seems to be riding a big wave now (too big?). Pov from a college students journey be it sports/classes/dating. But it would have to be something not tried and tested yet.

Other than that - films - outside of cartoons or computor animated ones - seem to be a downer these days - the Hollywood ones anyway.

I’ve never been to film school. Never applied to film school. Do
you think NYU is looking for what the industry is looking for
nowadays regarding film ideas?

I would think that a film school is looking to see the passion of
the writer/director. Not what a potential student thinks the
industry is looking for.

I see. Good point directorik.
I also like the POV thing with college students.
What's your advice on showing your passion in a film?
My idea was to document myself for a daily life in film, but
I figure many other students will also do it.

If you are passionate about something it will show.

If you are passionate about kitties you will make a
great movie about kitties. If you are passionate
about yourself in daily life you will make a great
movie about your life. If you are passionate about
scaring people you will make a great scary movie.
If you are passionate about making people laugh I
bet you could make a great comedy.

I'm not convinced that a film school is interested
in "reality". That's the staple of TV, but not in the
movies. The "reality" based movie "American Teen"
was picked up at Sundance for 2 million and made
$942,000. No one went to see it.

I suspect that NYU is more interested in seeing the
story telling skills of potential students. In seeing
how they translate their passion for movie making
into actual movie making. Not in documenting what
they see.

But I might be very, very wrong. As I said, I didn't go
to college. I never even applied to any college.

What are you passionate about, Godchoo? Do you
have something you really want show to others?

I'm more involved with the getting a certain
emotional response from the audience.
Like one of my goals is to be able to bring the audience members
off their feet and say that they've just seen the best movie ever.
So far I've been working on dramas and comedies.
I've also found that I have a knack for suspense and scary movies.
So pretty much everything. :)
I mean I really like to research real events and make a
movie that is a metaphor for the event.
This way it can be commercially viable and still be meaningful.
I find that people don't like to go watch "realism" films
as you said. So I subtlety stuff it into suspense and drama.
The audience doesn't even realize they've just watched a movie
about real events until the very end of the movie.
Topic wise I'm really up for doing anything that interests me.

Sounds like you know what you want to do. But you started by
asking what other people want.

When you read interviews with all the great directors about their
first films or their most successful films you find that they
never tried to make a movie they thought the “industry” was
looking for - they made a film they wanted to see.

What five films brought you to your feet and say that you've just
seen the best movie ever?

The Blair Witch Project was the one that really got me going.
But here are some others:

Requiem for a Dream
Forrest Gump
The Shawshank Redemption
Sweeny Todd
