cinematography gettin large d.o.f with t2i?

I recently purchased a t2i with a 50mm f1.8. I've been having a great time messing around with the shallow depth of field I can get from this lens, however Im actually having a hard time gettin anything but a small bit of the shot in focus. Anyone care to explain how I can achieve this with this lens (ISO, ShSP?)
I dont want all my shots to look the same.

As Ernest stated, the aperture should be smaller. Ironically, that means you want a bigger number on your f-stop. f1.8 is quite low. f8 and above will get you the wide depth of field you're looking for. Also, the wider the lens, and the closer you are to your subject makes depth of field wider, but first-things-first -- you need a higher f-stop (wider aperture).

and yeah, as CF said, there are other things to learn as well. wider lenses have deep dof.

and u can do other things to control ur dof. eg moving the subject close to the background.

i suggest typing something like 'managing depth of field' in google and doing some research. ull learn a lot that way.
