General Questions about making a short film

Hi all,

I'm a senior in high school and after thinking about it awhile, I'm interested in making a short film for my senior project. I've always had an interest in films and feel like it is something I want to be involved in in my future so why not try it out now. Anyways, I have little experience in filmmaking other than a 50 min. To Kill a Mockingbird retelling I made with some friends in 8th grade for an English project and some videos I helped make last year for a history project.

We have to find a mentor for the project and other than going to a school and taking a class or something I don't know where to find one. I live in the Sacramento area which isn't the greatest area for film schools. I also was wondering how much money should I even shell out. Since its a first time thing would it be better to just use a camcorder and a free editing program instead of buying a good camera? I have about $2000 dollars and a job right now, and little expenses to pay for so that's my budget range. Thanks for any advice.

I am working as a student mentor here in the valley for a group who want to go into the industry after graduation. as with what you were wanting to do they too are making a short for their senior project. I would say that you put in the amount of money that you feel you want to spend. The short will only be as good as you allow it to be. I would say though you need to purchase a camera. your work reflects you and your passion for film. Don't let it say you don't care. If you have questions about filming a short or about filming in general feel free to contact me.
