Free assignments? Contests?

I'm looking for some sort of goals to follow to learn in a quicker pace than I currently am. I've read up quite a bit on some things, but still feel like assignments I have to complete might help me out substantially.

Does anyone know where I can find something like that? A list of film making assignments that someone might get in school? Or maybe just a place where people have monthly contests?

I can buy books and dvds, but classes might be too much at the moment. Though, I would enjoy a class.. I live in a small city and eventually the cost would be too much.

Thanks in advance!

I'm ordering a Canon t2i in the next few weeks.. but at the moment I have a regular 300 dollar JVC digital camera.

I've been watching videos about composition, angles, lighting.. etc..

Don't forget experience on other films as a source for "assignments." You can check the boards on Craigslist, or search for the nearest 48-hour Film Contest-- you get to meet others, have fun, and lose sleep. But you can learn tons and believe me, low-budget projects need help and you WILL get assignments by simply saying "I'm here to help."
