$2500 will grab you a PCIe card with 420GB of memory (by the sounds of it, the system would see it as an extended cache) specifically tailored to speed up resource gobbling film tasks. Apparently developed during the creation of Hugo, the card is designed to enable real-time viewing of effects changes, even with high res and/or 3d film. Streams data at 1.4GB/sec which is crazy fast. SATA 3 does around 600MB/sec (written out as the more impressive sounding 3.0 GBit/sec). Latency measured in MICROSECONDS rather than milliseconds.
