filming today, chance of rain wtf?

I'm in vancouver BC right now. My film shoot is scheduled for tonight but I checked the weather on the website for night and it says cloudy with rain... uh...... what the f***? The one time its going to rain it chooses to rain on the exact time of day when I plan shooting?

this is gold. What should I do now? The one that says cloudy with rain is the one that comes up first on google. The second weather website only says its going to be cloudy.

say it starts raining on set, does that mean auto-shutdown? I won't have tarps or anything.

You need to have a backup plan for this kind of stuff, unfortunately. Is a hard lesson to learn, but pretty much anything that can go wrong with a shoot will go wrong. Get tarps or someway to protect your gear. Otherwise beg your personal and your location owners to let you shoot another day without charge.

It's been sunny here for the past 2 weeks, I cant believe this shit :hmm:.

You need to keep an eye on the weather forcast all week :P
For the community project I had to cancel last saturday and I saw on the forcast that next saturday will be rainy as well. Since today will end with thunder and rain and the forcast says it will be rainy till monday this saturday would be impossible as well.
Because I already saw that forcast last friday I improvised to reschedule. We shot last wednesday: I had to replace an actor, because of that, but we could shoot :)

In your case it seems that they don't expect a lot of rain. 1 Source says cloudy with rain, another says cloudy. Big change most of the time will be dry.
Get tarps and take measurements to keep things dry when it does start raining.
Instruct the cast and crew what to do in case it starts raining.

If the change of rain is serious, but it will rain only shortly, you can consider to make the floor of your exterior location wet before it rains to keep things consistent.

In the Netherlands there are websites with up to date rain radar maps with expected rain for the next 2, 3 and even 24 hours. Doesn't that exist in Vancouver?

I checked the details of the weather at 10PM - 1AM it says 20% chance of rain (showers) and at 4AM it will be cloudy sunny.

do you guys think I will be ok?

yeah walter, there are websites like that here, I forgot to check, thanks.

Is it unusual for it to rain in Canada? Why has this caught you by surprise?

I worked on a film in Vancouver in about this time of the year and the mantra was that they'd insert a line into the film saying how often the weather changes in Canada, just incase it started raining during shoots, or was mysteriously sunny the next moment.

Buy a tarp and plan for the worst!

This is also why, whenever possible, one should have cover sets/locations scheduled. If the shoot is scheduled for exteriors, have some interiors on stand-by in case of inclement weather. That way, there's no productivity lost in the long run.
