Filming on a roof top

Obviously this will differ from country to country but do I need a permit to film on roof top? Not my own house roof top, an industrial business looking one, one that looks really cool.

And more importantly, is it illegal to climb up and film there? Is that technically trespassing when it's a business in town? I'm shooting a parkour video which I obviously want to look very good, which means getting up high. The problem is half the time I don't know who to contact and the other half people are too worried about our safety even if we sign forms. One time I had this fallen apart house all lined up to film in then the owner decided it wasn't safe :/ so we went guirella and went to an abandoned house *shhh* which has since been demolished.

Anyway people's thoughts on this?

Thanks, Brendan

Yes, that most likely is trespassing if you are on someone's private property (even if it's abandoned) without the owner's permission.

I do not know what your local laws are. If you are on private property, with permission, then maybe you would not need a permit. Or maybe you might. There are several cities near me which require a permit even on private property within the confines of a building... and one of those strict cities will not issue that permit unless you've already been renting the property for longer than 6 months!

So you need to ask whatever local authority looks after your local permits. Maybe you won't need any at all. You won't know til you look it up locally.

If the building is privately owned (and 99% of the time they are), then you'd be trespassing if you climbed up there.

You'd need to contact the building owner. Sometimes that will be the owner of the company inside the building, sometimes it's someone completely different, but those inside such a building should be able to point you in the right direction. In general, you shouldn't need a specific permit for the use of the location itself, but you should always get the owner of the location to sign a location agreement just to cover your ass.

I mean if you want to go 'guerilla' style you could give it a shot, though I wouldn't want to be up there too long without a permit - shooting on a rooftop is hardly inconspicuous
