Film Studies in College

Hello! I'm a senior in high school and want to pursue film after I graduate. I have a few questions and if anyone can answer them that'd be great!

At the University of Colorado, which I plan to attend, the only major I find listed in this category is 'Film Studis'. Is a 'Film Studies' as a major more geared toward a critical or productive perspective of film?

What aspects of film does 'film studies' cover? Acting? Screenwriting?

Do most film schools supply a camera and include it with tuition or give you the name of a type to buy personally? Or does it vary between schools?

How much past experience would I want to have to begin studying film in college?

Again, if anyone can answer any one of these it would be awesome. Thanks!

You'd have to contact the department at that college and ask them what their focus is and if they have a production track. I'm at SCSU in the film studies major. Its focus is in film theory, but they've recently added production at the behest of the students within the program. So the way the education is focussed is really different from school to school.

It's most likely that it is focused on theory and history rather then production.

An easy way to get an idea is check the classes and it's description. Or you can call and ask like Knightly suggested.

It varies from school to school.

There are usually two different types of Film Courses:

Film Production deals with the practical construction of films. These courses will prepare you for working on a set. You'll learn about lighting, camera operation, cinematography, directing, and writing. If you want to make films you want a Film Production course.

Film Studies on the other hand deals with the theoretical composition of films. These courses generally involve watching films and then deconstructing them to discover the themes and subjects within. You'll be watching a lot of films but they won't teach you how to make a film. If you want to teach or review films Film Studies is for you.

Call the University and tell them what you want to with your life and career. I'm sure they'll tell you if the course is for you. :)
