Fake blood

Hey all,

I just finished my first short film, "The Biohazard", and it's a zombie film which required a lot of fake blood.

The blood I made, however, was really sticky. It was good because it looked real and was edible so the actors could put it in their mouths. But the stickyness caused some of the zombies to get really mad and it got everything they touched sticky. Overall it caused a lot of discomfort, which I don't want to have in the second part of the film, which I'm filming in a week.

My blood was made of corn syrup, red die, water, and hersheys chocolate syrup. I got the recipe from here. That website has over 10 different formulas for fake blood. Some are edible and some aren't. It doesn't say whether they're extremely sticky, and I don't have the time to test all of them out.

So do you guys have any formulas you'd be willing to share that yield non-toxic, realistic-looking blood that isn't too sticky?

Thanks

Well you can always buy fake blood. But in a professional setting actors have to put up with discomfort sometimes. It's just part of the job. Ask anyone who ever played an alien on Star Trek, those prosthetics weren't comfortable in the least and they would be stuck wearing them for 12+ hours a day.

Any formula that includes sugar is going to sticky - no way around that.

Wow I used basically the same recipe you did haha, I even explained it before going on to read the bottom of your post haha. I don't know what made yours so sticky, mine wasn't too sticky at all, it worked quite well. Maybe a bit less corn syrup?

The more you thin the corn syrup the less sticky it becomes.

I know you don't have time to test out different recipes so
maybe your best option is to buy blood. In the future, if you
ever get a few minutes of free time, trying out some different
recipes can save you a lot of money. I think both chocolate syrup
and corn syrup is overkill and may be why your blood is so sticky.
Try thinning the mixture with black coffee.

Another thing you can do for the actors is provide hot water
old towels. After each take they can dip their hands in the
water and wipe off the blood. That way everything they touch
doesn't get sticky.

Until you have a little time to do a few tests, just buy blood.
