This is the investigation, analysis, and dissection of the top youtube content providers defined by those with the most subscribers.
http://www.indietalk.com/showthread.php?t=44191

The intent is that by understanding what elements go into the concept, design, execution, and promotion of market valued content that we ourselves may adopt some of these practices in developing our own content.

Why would we want to do that?
Why would we even care?

For my own reason -
From the light research I've conducted in crowdsourcing at the beginning of the filmmaking process and the marketing and promotion of the completed film products the key is to come to the table having already cultivated a following.
> Cold calling for fi$cal attention is grossly ineffective.
> Bring an interested crowd to your crowdsourcing campaign.
> Bring an interested crowd to marketing and promoting your finished film.

I would like to see some of the reasons others here at IT are interested in top youtube content providers.
Zen Steve?
Lucky Hardwood?
Icba Pictures?
Paul Griffith?
Any one else?

This looks waaaaaay more complicated than just hanging out your shingle and hassling your family, friends, and forum friends to watch and subscibe.

I think I wasn't clear above.

If SBW is going to have a youtube channel - there has to be some content on it. I don't think it should just be Lucky doing that. So what is the plan to keep SBW as a funnel for the other channels?

If we aren't going to collectively add content to the SBW channel, then maybe it makes sense that it is just a site and not a channel.

If there is content on SBW the channel, then it should fit the stated goals - helping content creators product better content & build an audience.

Does that make more sense?

Maybe I'm not understanding what everyone else is?

My thoughts on central channel content is clips, promos and teasers, not full videos.

If we aren't going to collectively add content to the SBW channel, then maybe it makes sense that it is just a site and not a channel.
By uploading clips to the central channel, you are promoting your personal channel. The central channel should not be monetized.

If there is content on SBW the channel, then it should fit the stated goals - helping content creators product better content & build an audience.
I will be using the clips uploaded to the central channel to focus what the host talks about on the info show.

Does that make more sense?

Maybe I'm not understanding what everyone else is?

I'm thinking about buying this... any thoughts?

http://www.amazon.com/YouTube-Insiders-Guide-Climbing-Charts/dp/0596521146/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1355410553&sr=8-1&keywords=Youtube%3A+An+Insider%27s+Guide+to+Climbing+the+Charts

On a side note. I like this whole idea thing. It's kind of progressed away from a collaborative effort into more of a community of people looking to make videos and help and push each other to make their content. Well that's the way that I'm seeing things go. I'm all for it.

By uploading clips to the central channel, you are promoting your personal channel. The central channel should not be monetized.

If it does somehow generate sufficient traffic to monetize, it should be monetized. No point in leaving money on the table for no reason. The proceeds should somehow be spent promoting the group or to lift the profile of the central channel and funnel that interest into the other channels. If someone else has a better idea, shoot.

If SBW is going to have a youtube channel - there has to be some content on it. Correct.
We put content on our own individual channels
At SBW we then link to that content from the individual channels, like I just linked to MetalRenard Music's "Only Shadows Touch Album Teaser 1" as a temporary example.
https://www.youtube.com/user/placesofnature
(I'll delete that in a little while, MR, as I don't have access to SBW to link videos.)

Now, when I figure out or someone tells me how to add MetalRenard Music to the PlacesofNature channel just like he has in his right margin then I will.
And then when you get your channel up we can then put you in our list and you put us in yours.
When someone visits one of our channels they'll also be exposed to each other's "Friends of... " link list.
It just builds out from that - including to the SBW channel which links to all of us.

I don't think it should just be Lucky doing that. I agree. I honestly haven't just yet entirely figured out how that's going to work.
In principle is one thing. In practicality it's a wee more complex.

So what is the plan to keep SBW as a funnel for the other channels? It's not so much a funnel as a train station or airport to multiple destinations.

If we aren't going to collectively add content to the SBW channel, then maybe it makes sense that it is just a site and not a channel. I think that as it begins we can just start lumping whole uploads to SBW.
But as additional members join SBW there will need to be so limits places or "teaser-snipets" of videos linking back to each of our main channels.
In time it will become essentially a trailer or teaser site funnelling to our individual channels - which, BTW - everyone is free to ask others to join to make "main" channels for their own members.

If there is content on SBW the channel, then it should fit the stated goals - helping content creators product better content & build an audience. Definitely. I imagine we'll each be putting up tutorials on "Here's what I learned and am sharing with the SBW community."

Does that make more sense? I think I'm pretty much following you. :)

Maybe I'm not understanding what everyone else is? IDW, where everyone else is either.
MRM has a YT channel I know about and that's it.
I know LuckyHardwood has several channels but I don't know what they are.
Mckinise has a channel.
TanadrineStudios has a channel, but he's only expressed interest in joining the group.
I have a channel.
Icba Pictures is pretty close to starting a channel.
And that's all I know.
When people begin sharing channels we can better integrate them all into a community of affiliations and then back to SBW.

Good?

If it does somehow generate sufficient traffic to monetize, it should be monetized. No point in leaving money on the table for no reason. The proceeds should somehow be spent promoting the group or to lift the profile of the central channel and funnel that interest into the other channels. If someone else has a better idea, shoot.
In principle I agree, but would want to push that date off as far into the future as when we're talking about some coin worthy to buy promotional advertising for SBW that's worth the administration hassle - including the arguments that will undoubtedly arise.

HOT D@MN!

I just figured out how to link to MetalRenard Music on my Places OF Nature channel!
https://www.youtube.com/user/placesofnature

Who's next?!

Boom!
Mckinise, you're on.

Boom, Boom! Social Brain Wave added.

3,583

When you're on your YT channel under administrator goto your channel view,
to the right is a blue box inappropriately titled "Featured Channels",
click/open that,
copy and paste the member's YT channel address in there (not just a single video).
Done.

Oh, and I just subscribed to all three.
Shortly I'll hit ya'll's weblinks and FB pages!

$1 a month per user wouldn't bother me at all. I've made $100 from my channel since starting in January this year, and I'm in this for two reasons - to promote my work and to learn and share my own experiences.

My "featured channels" list is called "Friends of the Fox". Sadly it's already quite full, so I'm going to add Social Brain Wave, but I can't really add a lot more. Maybe 2 others...

Ray - How about if we collab on a video or two? You film some nice scenery and I write music for it? We could put this on the main channel to showcase both of our own channels. We could leave in any sounds you recorded too, and end up with something like this but with nice visuals: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZFd81jDYoY

Deal.

I'll listen to your music, get a feel for it, cogitate on it, float some ideas by you, we'll see what happens.
You get a video for your music. I get some music for my video.

I think there's a successful model of this plan...

What are we buying for a $1 a month?

And why are we blabbin' here instead of at our facebook page? https://www.facebook.com/SocialBrainWave

The magic number for a followship is 1 piece of content per day. 3 times a week (Mon/Wed/Fri) is the next best option. At least that is for blogs/websites. Now that we're adding youtube into the mix I'm not so sure what the magic number is. I'd like to aim for a similar number.

For TV, the magic number is either every week day or once a week for a season. The off season can be where you can lose people's interest.

One last thing people really need to know. The money doesn't come in hard and fast. It can take a while to start earning. It can take a while for youtube to accept us as a partner. At least that's the norm. Who knows, we could go super viral and hyper accelerate things.

How is everyone going to feel if we're a year in and we're only earning $1 each per month?

I'm going to be reading for a little while to get myself further ready for writing stuff for youtube. I've got myself a few courses and books on comedy. We'll see if they're worth reading I suppose. I also have a few ideas in mind for short comedy shorts that may go viral. Optimistically, late Jan maybe when I think I'd be ready to go ahead.

I am pretty sure we can do better than $1 a day. As far as updates go, I say each show has its own day. And is put out either weekly or Bi-Weekly. Special events can be given a specific date. Will be promoted on the show.

I like this, well put.

Do we have reddit on our list of sites to be managed? I set a subreddit up for the group -

http://www.reddit.com/r/SocialBrainwave/

It is set to private right now. You can send IDs and I'll add them.

That would be a good place for someone to be active like on facebook, google+, twitter and reaching out to other groups.

I can do that until someone else gets a hankering to.

I've been avoiding this thread because it's been expanding so rapidly and I didn't think I could keep up with the rate of conversation. Just went back and read the last few pages and it all looks really interesting.

Can someone write a simplified pitch of what you're trying to do? Just the basic 'this is what', 'this is why' and 'this is how' info... Thanks! :)

Social Brain Wave, the Central Youtube Channel, will work as a hub. It will feature Original content, trailers, and reviews for the various works that are housed on the individual channels. It will be used as the connecting point of several dissimilar brands of content, ranging from animated shorts to unscripted nature films.

Its purpose is to work within the Youtube system to help promote the works of the individual members to a level that is beyond what could be done alone.

I'm all signed up and linked the best I can. Webnickery is not my strong point (yes I make up words) so I may need more pointers along the way. Thanks for the tips so far guys. I would be willing to record a behind the scenes for what I am going to make next. Hoping to do a time lapse of the meteor shower tonight, but have never done that kind of thing, two cameras going with one guy... Should be interesting if not flat out entertaining??

For any of the video impaired members, you can sign up for an xtranormal account at xtranormal.com and use premade animations to set your music, script, etc to. There are two versions, the original which is very simple, but can be used effectively (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4W3yoSm-CQ for an example). There is also a much more feature rich version that you download to your desktop. It was still in beta version the last time I checked, but I have found it to be very stable.

I setup a form to capture everyone's pages and links so we can manage those.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet...ue&formkey=dC0tWHdCYjN3azU0OW1VMXJORjNJc3c6MQ

None of the fields are required, so don't feel like you need to fill out every piece.
Excellent.
Thank you, Miken.
Rockin' good idea!

rayw - do you want to edit the link to this on the front page so new peeps to the thread can see it?
How about I put a link on the front page to Social Brain Wave's facebook page and then I put a link to the page capture there?!
