emergency question for the tech savy about dvd burning

I have wasted several dvds trying to burn on a computer i've burned before, but it's not working now. Is it possible to connect my computer to another computer via a usb port and burn a dvd to second computer dvd burner from computer one?

How do you know it's hardware related? Have you tried reinstalling the DVD burning software? Have you tried different burning software? It is possible to network one computer to work as a client, but I'm not sure it's possible to do what you are asking to do through USB. It might be easier to just replace the bad burner (if you've positively narrowed it down to a hardware issue). One of my earlier mistakes was when I was first using Sony DVD Architect, great product, but when I was first starting out, I couldn't figure out the First Play setting and went through half a spindle of DVD-R's thinking that my program must be screwed up and ruined my DVD's, however, I finally realized my mistake, of course those DVD's were perfectly functional, it was just the order of the video I put as First Play, and the program simply did what I told it to do, not what I wanted. Bottom line, try different software, if that doesn't work, replace the burner, they are cheap these days, and easier to replace instead of trying to make a standalone computer a server through USB, if that's even possible.

The big issue is I'm a day late hitting deadline and I'm broke, so I was trying to come up with a one time fix...I have burned a dvd with dvd architect before with no problem, now it's telling me I have a hardware problem, and though the computer tells me my drive reads and writes (like it's supposed to) and it's telling me nothing is wrong with the drive, the computer is only recognizing it as a cd drive

Check to see if you can burn a CD-R, if so, then it sounds like a Driver issue, you may need to reinstall the burner driver, ot better yet, download a update/patch at the manufacture's website. If all of that doesn't work, you may be right, the burner may have died. Sorry, that's about all I can offer you.

To answer your question -- yes, you can connect computers but it would need to be done via a network connection. I'm not aware of a simple USB to USB cable/interface that creates a network connection. You CAN get a CAT5 crossover cable that allows a direct PC to PC connection through your ethernet port, but you would still need to have at least a basic knowledge of setting up a local network to get the two computers talking to each other. You could also use standard network cables to connect the two machines through a router/hub.

You mentioned that you're broke. Well, no matter what solution you come up with - it will probably require at least some cash to obtain the necessary parts.

My recommendation would be to render the video project to a DVD quality file and save it on your PC. Then go buy a USB memory stick large enough to hold a copy of the file (right now, Best Buy has a 4GB USB Flash drive on sale for $20). Move your file to the USB drive then use that to move the file to the other PC. Then when its all over -- you have something reusable.
