editing Editing sequence

Hello guys.

I have to edit a shoot i've done in a social center for old people. I put a lav mic in a lady that works there and we went to various sections in that social center and she explained what and how things are done in that specific section while i was filming.

So i filmed her talking about that section and then i did some shots in that specific place to put over her voice in post production. She talked in places like kitchen, refectory, a room with chairs and a stage where they have fun sometimes, rooms, a small chapel, outside (a old church and nature), a living room (with some ederly in there) etc.

This is basically by personal preference, but is there a specific place (from those i mentioned) that i should start? Maybe there is no right or wrong way to star but i dont know from where to start the montage.

It depends on a few factors.

Are there other parts of the story that would dictate the order of this scene?
Are there particular parts of the footage that would alter the pace of the sequence compared to the rest of the production?
Is there information that is needed earlier in the sequence to understand other parts of the sequence.

It's really a question for the editor to answer once they understand the production more and the footage within it.

I'd suggest to read a book or two about editing...

Until you're at that point, just put the videos in some sequence. If it doesn't feel right, delete and start again using a different sequence.

If the rest of the footage isn't special, then I'd suggest to keep on with the nothing special format you've already employed.

I think you should tell a story. Log all of the interview footage, and break it down into smaller sound-bites. Re-arrange those sound-bites in a way that allows you to say something. What do you have, and what do you want to say? These are the questions that dictate which order you place things.

Audio first. Then find the video to compliment it.
