Editing and Effects software?

Should I get after effects? And if so, what version do you recommend for a beginner who doesn't need much but would still like the practice with the software.

Also, are there some other programs that you would recommend for me to try out? What do you guys use?

I use AE myself. Motion has some useful built-in particle effects, but does not have the complexity of AE, so I never use it any more. Give yourself time with AE, as it has a big learning curve. I recommend following many of the great online tutorials, like on AETuts+, as creating complex effects will help you better understand the program's deep functionality.

So yes, get it, if you have a use for it. Right out of the box (without 3rd-party plug-ins) it's an excellent matte and compositing tool.

Thanks for that AE tutorial site. I'd never heard of it and it's got some cool stuff to try.

Thanks for the recommendations so far. I am checking out Nuke. I had never heard of it before now. I was also wondering about Pinnacle Studio's Studio HD Ultimate Collection. Does anyone know how it compares? Thanks in advance
