editing easiest way to animate this?

I'm guessing this is pretty basic stuff, but can't be certain. I'd like to make this vector based diamond rotate on its axis, so it appears 3D.

I'm editing in Premiere and have After Effects, but wasn't sure if it would be useful for this application.

Thanks in advance.

Pretty sure there should be a stock shape like that. If not you can easily make it yourself. You can animate it in 2D as well as long as you keep a flat perspective

Premiere and AE have Basic3D effects. But to be true 3d, you may want to make that in a program like Blender (which is free and relatively easy to use) and animate it. (or pay somebody a few bucks to do it)

Thanks for the ideas, folks.

Dready, since I already have the vector pieces of the diamond, could I import those individually into AE and precompose or would I still need to build them each in AE? I'm really green when it comes to this sort of thing so any tips are greatly appreciated. :)

As long as they are a compatible file type then it shouldn't be a problem to import them directly. I would probably go with transparent .pngs. You can discard everything but the middle ones and you'll need to create an actual hexagon for the top part since everything else has 'perspective' and you're going to be creating that perspective by building it out in 3d. If that makes sense?

uuuhhh.... :tear::scared::seeya:

I brought all the pieces in as transparent .png files. But I'll admit I have no clue how to go about what you suggest.

Will certainly muck around and see what I can do. Thanks for the ideas!

So you're going to get rid of the pieces that I put an X over. Turn the remaining piece's layers into 3d layers by checked the box where Iput the red dots.

Rotate it and copy paste the remaining pieces into a new spot. Rinse and repeat until you have the full 2.5/3D diamond. Create a hexagon, make the layer 3D and rotate it flat, place on top. Once you're satisfied that you've formed the diamond in 3D space, precompose all the layers and you should be able to rotate the precomp on the Y(I think) axis to get the effect you are looking for.

If it can wait until sunday or monday, I could have a go at it for you.

...gulp... I so wish my brain was able to dwell in the Z space. :) Isn't that how it goes? X, Y, and Z?

Dready, while I'd love to see what you come up with I don't want you spending any time on this at all. And if you do please send me an invoice. :P This is really just a mock up I'm messing around with and wanted to find out what was possible.

What I originally thought would be a snap obviously is anything but!

That's interesting that you posted, Ahmed, because I'm just now circling back to this thread/project as things are developing with this band out of San Diego. To make it easy for anyone who wanted to try (you, Dready...) I was going to post the .ai vector files for the heck of it. Here are the links

Cut a teaser with some test footage and will be piecing it all together over the coming months... (hopefully)

Going 80s retro with video feedback! One might argue that I'm stuck in that era. Could be worse, right?

here is your 3D diamond
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDaaS3lAlhs
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDaaS3lAlhs

It's in seq. files (200 Frames) 1280x720
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/uiog91xtdnhp0m4/DMJ_3epCiN/3D Diamond/3D_Diamond_Animated.zip

I made sure that from frame 1 to 100 is a perfect loop so you can extend as long as you want, and from frame 101 to 200 it stops with a smooth ease to end the motion nicely.

just few steps you need to do to import it in AE in a nice way:
1. while importing click on "Guess" or chose a white color manually in order to have a transparent BG.
01-import.jpg

So you will find the footage as a solid black and white stroke, like this "zoomed images":
02-Solid-Edges.jpg

2. if you would like to remove the white stroke, duplicate the layer and on the layer below chose:
"Luma Inverted Matte"
03-Transparent-Edges.jpg

i hope i made it clear ;-)

if you are interested to use the 3D diamond model in later projects,

here is a universal format that you can import in any 3D App

and if you wanna use Maya, here is tha maya project that i made,

Color me impressed, Ahmed! That's no diamond in the rough. ;)

This thread has been quite the education for me, as it seems there are many ways to go about animating this sort of thing, none of which I could easily have accomplished on my own (despite owning After Effects) which is why I posted in the first place. It wasn't until this past Thursday that I knew for sure the project was going anywhere, which is why I didn't want Dready or anyone else spending time on it.

I don't know if I will mess around with Maya (I don't own that program) but I will certainly import the QT file into the project and give it a "spin." It looks like it might just do the trick!

Many thanks for your assistance with this. :D

Jeff

Hey Ahmed,
Wanted to let you know that I imported the image files into Premiere just fine. Here's a test clip, just messing around...

Thanks again!

Dunno what happened with the other part of your initial design.. looks like you've got the diamond bit fairly well sorted out, and as for the other bit, it reminded me of part of this: http://www.videocopilot.net/tutorials/advanced_spin_fx/

You could use those techniques to achieve your rounded piece below the diamond, rotate it in 3d space away from the camera, and apply a feathered mask to fade it out as it gets further from the camera..

Diamond spinning one direction, other piece spinning the opposite. could be kinda cool
