DSLR or Camcorder

AYYY. Putting everything in the works right now for a short film. Was hoping to get some advice on what route I should go as far as a camera. I had talked with a specialist before and he told me to go with the t5i if I wanted to film with a DSLR. The only other thing that has caught my eye is the Canon XL1 MiniDV. Now that's definitely a lot cheaper than the t5i, but is it worth it more in quality?

Thanks!

Ok, maybe I'm just too old but I lived through CD, mp3, blue ray and HD revolution. I remember when regular HD TVs were 8 grands and now everyone got one. The only obstacle to 4k really is just unbelievable amount of data that has to be pushed thru, if cable and internet companies can figure that out it may happen sooner than you all think.

No. The 4K marketing push is replacing the mostly failed 3D marketing push.

Most theatrically released films are projected at 2K, even on ginormous screens. 4K is entirely unnecessary for home use, and it won't become a standard for home anytime soon... the vast majority of broadcast (terrestrial, satellite, cable) is still Standard Definition.

We have Direct TV and during storms, sometimes you can only get the Standard Definition channel. Also, we bought several HD TVs when they were still very expensive. Not buying another TV until one dies or can show a big need.
