DR-40 alien talk background noise.

I've noticed the DR40 has a weird noise when there's silence being recorded. he aliens are talking to me... or the unit picks up internal noise somehow. It doesn't affect listening to the recording until there's silence.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

What mic are you using with the DR-40? If it's a high impedance mic (such as the Rode VideoMic) the "helicoptering" noise is well documented. Each brand/model of high impedance mic creates a slightly different sound, but this is what you get when you mix high impedance and low impedance gear.

Aaah. Its the AT 897. It seems to make the same noise with the internals as well. What should I exchange it for or will it be a problem? Can only go up a little in budget.
Thanks Alcove.

The AT897 is a low impedance mic, so should not be the cause.

Is your cell phone in your pocket and activated when you are using the DR-40? Or is your open and active laptop nearby? When you use the DR-40 are you near radio towers, cell towers, high voltage power lines, etc.?

It may even be that you are hearing conversations from nearby rooms.

One more possibility is that your DR-40 is possessed... :D
