Does anyone have experience of getting a 'name' actor / actress?

I am thinking 18 months down the line. If I am OK at filming shorts (I have five at different stages of production), I want to be thinking about shooting a feature. However, the question I need to ask myself is how I get hold of a 'name' actor for next-to-nothing.

There is one guy i can approach who used to have a name (in the 80s) and he is a fine actor although is not a 'blockbuster' name. I think I'd have a 10% chance to get him on board for a nominal fee.

However, does anyone out there have experience of getting a 'name' actor who would just want to come on board for the hell of it (and a nominal fee)? Are there any peeps out there who have managed to get the involvement of a 'name' actor who would like to share how they achieved this.

Actors want to work. some will work for little money on the right
project. Especially an actor " who used to have a name (in the 80s)".
Chances are he is not getting a lot of offers.

Have a great script with an excellent part for the actor.
Have specific shoot dates.
Have a set fee you can pay. Be prepared to cover agent costs, transportation
and lodging and meals.
If the actor is still a member of SAG, be prepared to do the paper work
and meet all of the guild requirements.
