archived-videos DIY Windscreen / Deadcat from $6 to $9

Hey guys, just wanted to share a little diy I came up with for those on a tight budget. I basically came up with the idea to use a furry seatbelt pad as a deadcat and strapped it around the cheap foam of my shotgun mic. There is a demonstration of its wind resistance towards the end so you can hear the difference. Let me know what you think.

Good idea man. Should have come up with this a couple months ago. Could have saved me a couple bucks......maybe I should have thought of it. :)

Cool to hear that difference... you could get even more reduction with a longer hair length... I got mine at a fabric store for $1 for some costume fur remnants... made almost exactly what you've got with a sewing machine and got that same windspeed to go almost silent for a shoot... it was shocking to me.

These work by diffusing the wind that is blowing across the microphone, so that rather than being a straight line wind across a hard surface, it turns into a series of lower speed eddies around a soft surface with no hard edges to catch the wind and make the loud noise that hard edges do in wind.

Hey thanks guys! For the hair length I definitely would have went with a longer one if there was an option to. Maybe some other people will find a better one than this with longer hair. Hopefully they share where they got it if they do :). Yeah, have to also keep in mind that the end of the pad is open. Not sure how it would sound if it was sealed. :hmm: Thanks for checking it out guys!
