Different shots with a single-cam setup

This is probably going to sound like a stupid question, but I was wondering if anyone could tell me how filmmakers get different shots with a single-cam set-up with in a scene with dialogue, and the dialogue still being able to run smoothly.

I'm not sure there's any other way I can put it.
 
This is why you do rehearsals at an earlier date where they can have a bit of fun it's improv, which you eventually might alter the script to make room for

Though again not everyone has to work that way, but it's what I prefer. Once we're on set if the line isn't delivered with every syllable as written then the talent has "blown" the line as we shoot another take.
