Dark Tower

Prepare to hate me(or not). I am a very big fan of the Dark Tower Series By Stephen King. They are the first novels I read from start to finish. Since then my reading has varied and consists mainly of Edgar Allan Poe and Emma Goldman. Am I the only one who thinks this movie should not be made?

My reasons.

Director - Ron Howard. I cannot say that I have ever liked his work. The only one of his movies that I can say I have watched all the way through was Apollo 13.

Screenplay - Akiva Goldsman.... The man who brought you Lost in space 1998, I, Robot and the horrid remake of I AM LEGEND. My beef with man really started with the Da Vinci Code.

Lastly Javier Bardem as Ronald Deschain (Main Character) - I have only watched this actor in one movie. Im glad to say it was No Country For Old Men. So, I do not doubt his acting ability. I just can't visualise him as Ronald.

This was not an attack on those mentioned. Ok, maybe Akiva. Maybe its too early to tell if they can pull it off. Then again it might be the next Eragon.

Well you never know it may be good. Ron Howard has done some good work in that genre with Willow. I also really liked Cocoon, Parenthood and Cinderella Man from him and I think the man can direct. So chin up. You never know. Never worry in advance.

Ron Howard could pull this off on his own talents. He's never really been a director limited to only one type of movie.

I'm not crazy about the screenwriter or leading man though. I read about them the other day, and both choices make me far more wary than the news of Howard directing. I want to see these books made into films, but I'm definitely taking a very cautious wait-and-see kind of approach to all this.

At least the names Howard and Bardem carry enough weight to have the potential to do it right. Not saying they will, though. I'm a little doubtful, actually.

Deadline New York: ‘Ted’ Backer MRC In Talks To Finance Stephen King’s ‘The Dark Tower’

I don't really have a dog in this race. I'm reading the books now. They're okay. But the attempts to bring them to film are kind of an interesting saga: Will these books be adapted? How will they be adapted? Will it be gold or will it be fool's gold, as it's put in this article?

How would they be if adapted into feature films? Would they find enough of an audience? I think for that to work, for them to be good films, King and whoever else who would be in charge would need to step back and allow for perhaps significant divergence or alterations.

I kind of hate to say it, because I love good feature films, but the miniseries format might be the better fit for The Dark Tower...on Showtime, HBO, Starz, or wherever. So much good stuff has been happening in that venue.

I think Russell Crowe as Roland would be a better fit than Javier Bardem, and would probably be quite good. I think I'd probably like that. But, I think I'm kinda stuck on the idea of Guy Pearce playing him.

Ah...looks like Media Rights Capital is doing some interesting things.

"Ronald" Deschain?

. . .

I thought you said you'd read the books?

Yeah, it's been interesting to watch. I'm of mixed opinion on this one...I love the books, but I don't know how well they'd translate to film. People expecting a typical Stephen King movie aren't going to like it. And I agree that TV miniseries (which, if I recall, they were talking about at one point) would be a better way to go.

And MRC being involved in the next Riddick film, Cloud Atlas and Elysium? They're damn cool in my book!

I wonder if the specter of Cowboys and Aliens's poor performance hurts the prospects of a poperty like The Dark Tower?

Western + SciFi = Hmmmmmm...?

What precedent can we (a major studio) look at in making our decision?

There is a positive precendent that I can think of off of the top of my head. Don't know if that includes a positive example of box office performance. But personally, I think Back to the Future 3 is a damn fine, entertaining film. But that doesn't seem all that similar to The Dark Tower, either. Oh well.
