Content Providers for Digital Cinema Distribution

Hometown Exhibition is planning to build a 10,000 screen independent Digital Cinema Network “DCN” across North America. Our DCN is made up of theaters that have not signed onto the VPF agreement model. Hometown is also starting the process of building a community of content providers: filmmakers, studios and distributors to give a selection of movies to the DCN theaters.

AccessIT, the largest network has over 5000 digital projectors installed worldwide. AccessIt has Virtual Print Fee agreements with the Hollywood Studios; a “VPF” agreement. Kodak, Technicolor and AAM, XDC in Europe and UFO in India also have VPF agreements with the Studios. These networks charge the distributors the VPF to offset the cost of the equipment. It costs about $70,000 per room to convert to digital. Theaters that agree to use the VPF model pay very little to be converted to digital.

Filmmakers who want to use a VPF theater have to pay an "alternate content" fee. This costs more than the VPF. Independents could get distribution through a major distributor and let them pay the fees. The chances of getting distribution are very small.

Hometown plans to rent our DCN for 30% less than the VPF based networks.
