Choose Your Own Adventure Movie?

I just had the idea that some one should make a choose your own adventure movie. With todays technology you would think they could program a menu for a blu ray to do a choose your own adventure. I wonder if any big time director or production company will try to do it. Is there money to be made doing these type of films? I would think it could be popular if done right. I guess they probably would be movies that are direct to dvd or blu ray or maybe bonus features for a block buster movie delux edition.

This has been done for quite a while on dvd and laserdisc. They're not popular with a few cult exceptions from early laserdisc days.

There's been a few done online too.

Hey, that's pretty neat. I'm doing it right now.

Edit****

Oh, I didn't really know that it was a test when I started, a win or lose sorta outcome. It comes off almost as a morality test. And it seems I was punished for opting to help my fellows out. Hmmm. Kinda disappointed on that score. I guess I should be more of an egoist, if I want to survive.

I love stuff like this. There was a Dungeons and Dragons direct to dvd release that I had a lot of fun with (my CYOA collection was only dwarfed by my D&D Endless Quest book collection...I still have nearly all of them). And, as srbclarke mentioned, the old laserdisc games were great, for those who like this sort of thing. There was also the early PC CD-ROM wave of "interactive movies"...stuff like the 7th Guest or Phantasmagoria which featured puzzle/adventure games chock full of live-action cutscenes. They fell out of fashion, which is a shame, because they could be done really well now.

Maybe the way to do it would be to release a feature film, normal, traditional style movie. Then a web/dvd release of an interactive version. When you get to "choice" screens, you can make it even more interactive with little puzzle/mini-game sort of things (again, see the puzzles in 7th Guest, etc). How well you do on the game can affect the scene you get to watch next...how well your choice worked. The drawback to this? It would be a LONG and expensive production. You'd need a ton of footage and exponentially more edited scenes than you would for a standard movie.

I'll have to check out the Outbreak game when I get home. Sounds like something I'd enjoy. I think doing a niche genre (zombie attack, fantasy, sci-fi) would be the way to go if you want to do something like this. As great as it would be, I don't think it would be mainstream popular, though who knows! I think it would be awesome doing something like this!

That mess is AWESOME. I'm sure it'll become gimmicky at some point (I remember when seeing a 3D movie was a special occasion...), but if done right that technology could be really, really cool. And yeah, the choose-your-own adventure thing has already been done (I'm positive I've seen a commercial for actual DVD movies based on the books themselves), but not enough! It's a great idea that, again, hasn't become gimmicky yet.

That is awesome! Glad they namedropped William Castle; this is totally like the crazy gimmicks he used to use (actors in the theater, buzzers in the seats, etc, etc). Or Clue...each print shipping with one of the three endings, attached randomly. Absolutely 100% gimmicky and cheesy...and fantastic because of that!

The big question here is, gimmick aside, is the film any good? Again, referencing Clue...marketed with a gimmick, but at home, with the gimmick removed, it's still fun to watch. Ditto The Tingler, which is one of my favorite Vincent Price films.

Oh, and FormerDominator, you are correct: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Choose_Your_Own_Adventure:_The_Abominable_Snowman
I am ordering this as we speak! It's a shame it wasn't one of the books I liked better (Cave of Time and The Mystery of Chimney Rock were two of my favorites), but either way, pretty awesome.

On the topic, anyone ever read the Grail Quest books? They were CYOA with MORE RPG elements (you rolled up a character, combat dice rolls and actions, etc).

....for all of us who loved to play D&D but were too geeky to even have geeky friends ;-)
