Canon 5d MKii vs Panasonic GH3

Which one is the better camera?

I'm having a bit of an upgrade dilemma(no I can't afford the mkiii). I have a 550d atm and have invested a lot in Canon lenses so I'd need to use an adaptor if I went with the GH3.

I also do some photography as well as filmmaking. Obviously the Canon will be better for photography but how much worse is the GH3? Is it at least as good as the 550d for photography?

One worry I have with the GH3 is that the average client won't know what it is. You get some people who say they want a videographer with at least a 5d Mkii, when you tell them you have a GH3 they might look down on it and think it's not as good as the Canon.

Which one do you think is the better camera of the two?

GH3 says I.

BUT and its a BIG BUT!!!

If you have an investment in EOS glass then your better off with the 5D.

EOS does not adapt (well) to the M42 mount. Dont know if there is any electronic control passing through so if its NOT a manual lens then it will shoot wide open. There is an adapter with its own iris, but that seems hokey.

Damn that's a bit of a let down. I never even looked at the Panasonic cameras before, but when I heard that Upstream Color was filmed with a hacked GH2 and even Francis Ford Coppolla likes the GH2 it made me consider the GH3...

Peleng 8mm
Samyang 14mm
Canon 28mm 2.8
Canon 50mm 1.8
Sigma 70 - 300mm

Eventually I'd like the canon 85mm 1.8 aswell.

I've got 2 manual aperture lenses, but the other ones are all electronic.

I've just watched Philip Bloom's Gh3 short film and it looks ridiculously cinematic, good enough for tv in my opinion.

Maybe I can just upgrade to the MK2, then later on if I'm rich I can get a second hand gh2.

wheatgrinder - I agree with you that the GH3 is the best hybrid still/video camera on the market, but one issue needs clarification.

ajedproduction - The GH3 is a micro 4/3 mount camera, not a M42 mount camera - and you can electronically control adapted EOS lenses on m4/3 cameras with a £370 Redrock LiveLens Micro Four Thirds Active Lens Mount.

The Redrock LiveLens provides power to your EF lens and a control pad to adjust the lens aperture. With the LiveLens MFT you can set your EF lens' aperture to any stop in increments as small as 1/3 stop.

With a £1204 Panasonic GH3 and a £370 Redrock adapter, you will get 72mbps 1080/50p, a headphone jack, a 30 minute clip length limit and a viewfinder than continues working in video mode - none of which is offered by the 5D Mark II. You will still be able to use your Canon glass, and you will have spent less than the cost of a £1599.99 5D Mark II body.

I was a Canon shooter who sold his T2i/550D when I bought the GH2, which was just as good a stills camera as the 550D. And my GH3 is even better :)

Highly recommended.

Hope this is helpful,

Bill
