cinematography Camera Choices/Workflow/Shot Types

I'm trying to establish a loose set of rules for which camera to use for a required shot on a shotlist.

I'm loving my HDSLR for video, but one area of expected problems would be long, deep focus, wide angle shots where aliasing and moire may be a problem I don't notice until edit time. There are enough examples out there on the interwebs that it's impossible to ignore.

At the moment, I plan to shoot anything with deep focus on a Canon XHA1s and anything with shallow(er) DOF - some full shots, mediums, and close-ups on a T2i/550D.

I'm hoping that the XHA1s, with its infinite custom settings, will be made as flat and matched to the T2i/550D as possible so tweaking and grading won't be a huge issue in post.

Has anyone been doing something like this with what they have available and with similar concerns?

hum aliasing and moire should be the only issue, the DSLR "SHOULD BE ABLE" to do deep focus, we just need to STOP DOWN.. if out side its hard to NOT get DEEP focus, tis why everyone says get ND filters for outside.. we can stop down to f22 .. and be good. Remember, a pin hole camera has infinite DOF.

I think Ill play with this this week.

I'll be out playing, too.

I didn't mean to imply they can't deep focus, it's that when they do, that's when the aliasing and moire tend to be the worst. One of the workarounds is shooting as wide open as possible to soften things up a little.

Like I said, I love the camera, but I'm realizing it has its limitations - like any camera I suppose.
 
Remember that on most lenses, once you stop down past f/8 or so, the effects of diffraction start to kick in, leaving you with a picture that is not as sharp as it could be.
 
I'm starting a similar project for one of my regular clients. He has an EX-1, an EX-1r, and a 5dII. We want to go through and profile them so that they are close in characteristics for post just in case. Mostly it's a color thing, we're not going to get them the same - obviously - but there are lots of settings in the EX where we could tone down the sharpness and come close to a similar color gamut. Hypothetically.

It's a back-burner thing for both of us, but I'll pop in here from time to time and update with what we're doing, and probably look for help. ;)
