Budget breakdown help

Ok let me see if I can word this properly. I would like to know when you are making your budget how to break it down. For example crew 20% cast 20% make-up you and costume 20% locations 20% and post 20%. I totally made up those numbers and don'teven know if it all adds up. So what percentages of your budget do you decide to go to what or is there another way todo it. all advice is welcmed.

That might be fine in general. But useless as a "real" breakdown.

For example; you have said you have 30 day shoot, 10/15 locations,
12 cast, extras and prosthetics. My film has an 18 day shoot, 4
locations, 5 cast (no extras) and a car chase with gun fire and explosions.

the percentages for those films would be very different;
You - more cast cost. Me - much less.
You - more location costs. Me - much less.
You - less special efx cost. Me - much more.

You may spend 20% of your budget on locations - I'm spending 10%.

You will need to do a full line item breakdown, not a percentage estimate.

Christine Vachon's book, "A Killer Life," has a great, large sample feature budget inside. You will need to adjust its numbers for inflation!

There are other examples floating around, books on budgeting, etc. Google it.
