Blues History...

Hey guys, i'm thinking of doing a documentary on blues and the progression on it from the early 19th century to this era. The thing is, i want to add some emotions into this movie but i'm not sure how.:huh: I assume its about the poverty, depression and the oppression but i'm not sure what kind of images should i see...:( Any suggestion here?

The blues is not just about being down and out . It's also about the dance halls that were gathering places for celebration . :D If you want to give only the down tempo side of the blues men from back in the day , try filming them at the places where they found their songs of sorrow . Check out some records by Son House and a Dallas artist named Blind Lemmon Jefferson.

There's lots of imagery with the blues! The blues goes back to songs slaves sang in the fields, and street corners where buskers strummed guitars. BB King introduced the electric guitar to blues, and in between and on there are many different sounds from different regions. Delta blues, Piedmont blues, etc.

From what I read I think it would be a better documentary if the subject was you traveling around discovering the history of the Blues. Not so much just you shooting a bunch of things dealing with the blues but you going to the library researching, traveling to different areas of the country talking to different blues musicians, even interviewing people who just listen to the blues, talking to disc jockeys, playing different types of blues music in the piece. Splice it all together in a coherent timeline. That would make for an awesome documentary. I would say take that route but this is only my opinion. Good luck. Let us know how everything turns out.

Sorry, I couldn't resist...

Documentaries start with LOTS of research. Since the subject appears to be new to you perhaps that should be the subject of your doc; film yourself doing the research and the audience joins you on your journey of discovery.

Yes, a quest is a great doc. I watched one on a guy trying to find how Robert Johnson died, and where he was buried. Oh, and if you don't know who that it, yes, PLEASE do research ;)

Just a history of the blues sounds bland, and "made for tv."
