Black Swan

Saw this last night with some friends. Good stuff. Not Aronofsky's strongest work, but still good. Astounding technical achievement with the use of mirrors throughout the film. Natalie Portman is okay, but the rest of the film around her as the effect of boosting the impact of her performance. Mila Kunis came off as just being herself, which is either really awesome acting, or just being herself. Hard to tell.

Without spoiling - I think they borrowed too many shots from The Wrestler, and the sound design was not as strong as in his other films - some of the more subtle/surreal sounds didn't work as well as ones he has used in films like Requiem, Wrestler, or PI. All in all solid, but this movie seemed more made for an audience than for himself or for other film makers. Something about it just lacks the power of his other films. Still good, I still recommend it and enjoyed it. I'm just picking nits. :D

Also, the s16 looks amazing - but in the hands of a dp like Libatique I'd expect no less. :D

The most interesting thing about the viewing was that it was a sold out screening full of young women who all appeared to be or have been ballet dancers. The reactions from that crowd made the whole thing seem more visceral in a way that I normally don't notice.

I cannot wait for this to come out over here... I have been looking forward to this ever since the script was released online over a year ago. I'm not a massive Darren Aronofsky fan but this looks incredible. It comes out on my birthday over here so I might have to wait a few days before I go and see it :(

I try and tell myself that I want to see it because it looks like a really interesting art film but...well, I will watch *anything* that has Natalie Portman in it... even the Star Wars prequels... ;)

Not released for another few weeks here.

Salt in the wounds.

Really? Interesting. Sorry man. :(

See it. It's a really excellent film. I am just an Aronofsky fanboi who got all nit-picky with the details.

We saw this last night. I enjoyed it tremendously. So did my wife. A few of my friends didn't like it as much because of the surrealism, but then they hadn't seen any of his other films. I've seen them all.

I guess I wont marry Natalie Portman then... Ahhh..... I was hoping to get famous and meet her. I all ready lost Jessia Alba to Cash too. I'll just have to move on I guess.

Black Swan (2010)

Absolute masterpiece, and I’m jealous of Darren Aronofsky. This is not a “political film,” but I’ll talk about it anyway. Natalie Portman is outstanding, and since there are spoilers you should run right out and catch this film before anyone says any more about it.

I thought Black Swan, from beginning to end, was just magnificent. The sound design, the photography, the plot, the acting... Natalia Portman was flawless. And gorgeous as usual. She definitely deserves an Oscar; or at least a nomination for that role. We can tell she practiced and developed dancing skills.

It is rare to see a movie whose villain is the protagonist itself. It is even rarer to see such movies work. But Black Swan did. I don't wanna spoil it, but viewers are definitely in for a treat. I recommend it %100.

I liked the last 45 minutes or so immensely, but the first hour was too slowly paced for my tastes. Portman was excellent.

No way, really? It's interesting how subjective this is. Black Swan hooked me from the very beginning. I do agree that one could say that it has two conflicting halves with two distinct genres. I don't know if this makes much sense, but for me the first half of the movie is about a dancer who wants to excel at what she does. And even after been selected as the Swan Queen, she still works her butt off, striving for perfections. The second half is far more intense and suspenseful, but I loved them both.

Just not that pumped to see it. I'm going to the movies tomorrow, but I'll probably see True Grit.

True Grit was a letdown. It was okay, but it wasn't great. It feels nothing like a Coen brothers movie. It is a classic western... and I love westerns, but there was something missing in True Grit. Maybe my expectations were too high... Black Swan caught me off guard.
