I have seen Monsters - and is indeed great work.

Are there any other films below even $50M that had big needs of fx work and they did great work?
Any FX companies that have a great portfolio of films (with no huge budgets)?

Many $million films these days employ some VFX work, it's just that a lot of it isn't necessarily hugely noticeable. Even a film like Gone Girl, whose budget was not that much more than $50m, and takes place mostly inside a house, had a significant amount of VFXC work donw
