Best Mic Type

I'm going to be filming in am indoor location with only me speaking, what would work best in this situation a lapel mic or a shotgun mic? Also what mics could you recommend that give very good sound quality?

Thanks,

Chris.

Budget?????

Are you a one man crew or will you have help?

What sound gear do you already possess?

One man band, currently i own no sound equipment. The equipment needs to be compatible with a canon eos 60d. With regards to budget im not sure what good equipment will cost, i could afford upto 300-400 but would prefer to pay less.

Thanks i think I'll give the rode videomic pro a go seems well reviewed and has more versatility than a lapel mic.

Only using a Rode mic planted on the camera is going to restrict you to substandard sound. It is the same as saying "Im only going to use one setting on my camera for all shots". A properly used mic on a boom and lavs are the beginnings of decent sound IMO. Good Luck

There is no "Best Mic." There are choices to make for each situation you will be shooting.

A handheld mic would be appropriate for an ENG type of situation.

A lavaliere is an equally appropriate option.

A hypercardioid on a boom-pole would also be an acceptable choice as long as it is placed properly.

What you need to do is look at your future needs as well. Since you are on a tight budget an Audio Technica AT897 or Rode NTG-2 may be a possible option - they're self powered, so will work with your camera and can be used for other types of projects.

You will need to be extremely careful with the placement. If you are just a little bit off-axis you will be recording what ever is behind you and not your voice. And yes, you DO need the adapter and you DO need the shock mount.

The Rode VideoMic Pro is another option, but limits you more in the future.

As always, my primary suggestion is to hire a pro, next is to hook up with an up-and-coming production sound person and only as a last resort do you DIY.
