Best Colorist?

I'm looking at a few interesting tutorials on Color grading and I wondered who people thought were some of the best Colorists out there. Who has done some really stunning work? It can be anyone from Academy level to your best pal.

Questions:

Does it really take ridiculous amounts of render time to do any decent Color Correction work?

Any good tutorials?

Any other tips?

One thing i'm noticing about a lot of these corrected clips is they get a nice look at the expense of a lot of crushed blacks. Does it need to be this way? Isn't that just sloppy? I'd have though you could relighten those blacks after you got the colors you wanted.

I never thought I'd be geeky enough to care about things like crushed blacks but they really stick out in the "Apple Color Vs Magic Bullet" + "Film Look Test" clips.

hehe look at this comment:

Steven you ignorant slut, you forgot to de-interlace your video. Other than that great video.

I'm also noticing a lot of amateurs going over the top.

Special mention to this video as the Cannon HV30 again shows itself capable of creating near movie-grade footage for around 1000 bucks. Gets good about a minute in. Some great visuals from what looks like sloppily shot footage.

Decided to get a bunch of HV30 vid. Damn I really love this camera. Apart from the DVX, it's the only cam I've really fallen in love with from some youtube clips.

Some really nice vid examples there.

I always like to show this one to people, because this guy is getting a name for himself around the New England area...his name is Leo Kei Angelos, he's 23, and a sick DP and color artist.

This is a teaser for A DUEL AFFAIR --shot on the HVX 200...amazing I think. This is what you can do with a decent HD cam if you have the skills:

And here are some color grades by my brother, Anthony Penta, whom I think has some very solid subtle skills...nothing outrageous and stylized...but totally professional:

I just do everything in the Avid (and seldom stepping into the secondary CC at that). Never have I had to go to Devinci or anything esle to get to where I wanna go. I did in the linear daze but not in the last 15 years or more.
