Best Buy/Walmart/Target Exclusives

a friend of mine a few months ago showed me some of the cool bonus discs that are put out in short order from each major retailer in the interest of getting your $$$. Sometimes "eh" and other times, pretty damn cool.

Yesterday I got HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART I on Blu Ray at BEST BUY because it had a 4th disc (Blu Ray I might add) that had over 60 minutes of bonus behind the scenes material. Uh, that kicked ass. Walmart's exclusive for the same movie was on the SD DVD, they added all the extras from disc 2 of the BLU RAY, so they are the only ones to have the 2 disc special edition of this title on regular DVD.

In the past, I got a bonus DVD of ridiculously bad "behind the scenes" for the movie CLOVERFIELD called TJ's DIARIES which were poorly made skits with the actor TJ MILLER. Then again for X-Men, WALMART put out a bonus disc that was a 1 hour documentary on the history of the X-Men in the comics with interviews with Chris Claremont, Jim Lee, and tons more (with a notable exception of no John Byrne, the old curmudgeon). There was even a different bonus disc of material for each of the 3 main retailers for season 5 of 24.

So, what are YOUR favorite store exclusive bonus discs? Anything noteworthy as to being really cool content or something really lame?

There's not enough BTS on the three-disk. Top find, Sonny.

I went for the four disc exclusive too. In the UK it's being distributed through HMV only. Then I realized that the fourth disc was the 'Behind the Magic' documentary that was still sitting in my Sky+...

But gotta say, slightly off the point, that the Maximum Movie Mode on HP7 is just too cool.

Woah, woah, woah. What is "Maximum Movie Mode"?

Have you bought it?

I'm not sure if it's on all the versions or just the Blu Ray but MMM (as I like to call it) is where it plays the movie through but with cast and crew coming on screen to explain the shooting process.then sometimes the film is minimized and the BTS documentaries take over or sometimes the film totally pauses and they go into retail on stuff. It's pretty awesome.

Yes, the triple-disk Blu-ray. Ahhhh, yes. I'm aware of that. That's on the agenda for tomorrow morning, then.

The sets are so beautiful, Godrics Hollow was stunning. Fantastic work.

I think that being Production Designer on the Harry Potter films would possibly have been my dream job :( Stuart Craig has done such awesome work and the special features (for this and the previous films) have shown the level of detail to his and the department's work. It's awe inspiring.

Even for this film where they had no Hogwarts and therefore had to build lots of unfamiliar sets, especially for the camping sequences, their design is just stunning. As you say, Godric's Hollow looked phenomenal.

A morning well spent, I assure you ;)

So i've just finished watching the MMM of Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 1. It was very inciteful, and again, reiterates its well deserved applause for such a broad production.

It was heartwarming to see the cast and crew on their final day, and scene, of Principle Photography for Harry Potter. Gathered around a 42" inch television-screen as their Producer plays a short-film/montage, consisting of still pictures of each filming day, from start to finish over the last 8 productions. Together for 10 years. I can only imagine how bittersweet the moment would be.

It's perculiar. Harry Potter is very much, as far as Cinema is concerned, the staple diet of my childhood. From first seeing the movie at 10 years old on a school trip -We had snuck sweets in our hats, only to be foiled as a not-so intelligent friend of mine had chosen to hide a fruit-loaf beneath his cap, which was immediately discovered. I never did like fruit-loaf- and now, at 20 years old, I prepare to sit and watch its eagerly awaited end.

To have grown up as apart of this band of those who where introduced, and birthed into Harry Potters whirlwind phenomena, with the naivety and pittance of its new release year after year, corresponding with each Birthday, as effectively as a loyal, and devoted friend who visited just once a year.

It's very interesting, now, as I consider this my profession, and know of the unity it takes to muster such an accomplishent, the biggest franchise in film history, to truly see, and if only minutely, understand what must be a bewildering, beautiful end.

My favorite store-exclusive bonus was the Farscape box set that came out last year. The complete series, and the Best Buy bonus was the Peacekeeper Wars miniseries (which it definitely isn't complete without!)

Oh, and sometimes Walmart has some pretty good "4 or 5 crap movies for $5" bundles. Even relatively legitimate films; I picked up the Matrix movies, including the Animatrix for 5 or 10 dollars (and enjoyed the sequels a LOT more when I could sit down and watch them all in one go). I once saw a set with the first five Saw movies, but it hasn't been back every time I've checked. I used to hate sets like that, but given that these days people rarely even bother with a chapter listing insert, it's not so bad. Particularly irksome if said DVD has a slipcase that's the EXACT SAME THING AS THE DVD COVER. I love a good slipcase, but they're so few and far between (though they are better used in music).

I'm still touting the 4 disk set of "Panic Room" So much valuable BTS process exposed.

Never heard of that one.... Sounds pretty amazing. Fincher did a great set of stuff for THE GAME, but only the Criterion Collection LASERDISC that no one can find any more.

I'll testify that The Social Network's bonus documentary 'How Did They Ever Make A Movie About Facebook?' (or something like that) is really cool, as well.

Gotta back up PTP about the Potter series. It's been the same experience for me- more so with the books- going to see the movies ever since I went to the 'children's Premier' of the first one. It's an amazing achievement and, all round, is probably the defining cultural event of my recently extinguished childhood.

Still, the child in me had to go to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter last summer and, if they expand it, I'm definitely going again!
