Audio cassettes / 80's pro tape recorders

There are lots of pro tape recorders in the thrift stores of today.

Since I'm not currently in a position to purchase any digital audio recorders atm, I want to use an old portable audio cassette recorder to get a double-take of the audio from my shots, then use a male-to-male cable from the phones out port of the cassette recorder to the mic in of my laptop, then edit that wav file into the footage on my laptop.

Are these audio cassette recorders still functional enough for this purpose? Does anyone still use audio cassette recorders in this millenium?
