Applying for college

Okay so I met with a counselor yesterday for college. And they have this program for multimedia. I like it but would see what you guys think. Thanks.

Does the college include any of the professional software in your tuition or do you have to pay for it all out of pocket if you want any of it? Do they include a camera and other equipment or do you only get to use the schools? I ask these questions because the online school program I am taking from Full Sail includes a Macbook Pro loaded with the full Adobe Suite, Final Cut Pro X as well as a Sony NEX FS 100 camera with a lighting package. However Full Sail is not cheap. There are mixed reviews about it like any other for profit school. People get out of it what they put in.

Yes they have equipment. I believe she said they have final cut. The only thing I would have to get is a MacBook.

They have or you actually get to your own copy and own equipment? I get to keep my Macbook, the camera and all the software when I graduate. All the schools around me had equipment and software I could use but I had to purchase my own out of pocket if I wanted it.

I don't think it's particularly common for film schools to give students equipment. Full Sail is more expensive than Cincinnati and isn't a traditional "film school". To answer your question, it's hard to tell simply by looking at the curriculum but it looks like there are some good classes in there, although not quite a traditional narrative film program; it seems to be geared more towards corporate video/communications. If you're trying to work in the technical side of things, it's probably a good choice. If you want to write/direct it still looks like a decent curriculum but you may benefit a little more by attending an actual narrative film program.

One thing that you shouldn't overlook in searching for a film school is location. I'm in the process of choosing a film school to transfer to when I finish community college and I've decided to attend one in a city with a lot of film productions going on. I'm not sure if Cincinnati has a lot of film/tv work going on, which is something you want to look into, as it's a great way to make connections and gain experience, and that's probably the most important part of film school.

No I have not. I was reading that if you get transfered to main campus and complete two years there then you can get a internship. So I am going to see..

Every school will tell you that. You can get an internship as long as you are in college at all (actually I had one while I was not a student). The real question is if they can get you a job.

Some really good film schools you should check out are:
Tisch School of Arts
UCLA
USC
AFI

UCLA isn't actually that expensive compared to a lot of good film schools.

Whatever you do, do not go to a school owned by EDMC (look it up). They are major scams. (i.e. The Art Institutes).

I went to Point Park University for a short time in Pittsburgh, PA and they have a fantastic film program. I know two graduates that just moved to LA to work on features they got signed for right out of college. The school also lets you use their equipment after graduation unlike a lot of schools.

adobe cs6 academic production premium pricing < $600. I would not use "free" software as a factor. $10K for camera and computer?

based on this information "http://online.fullsail.edu/admissions/tuition"

$7,750 X 8 semesters = $62,000.

Seems a "newish" laptop and cam is only 1/10th your cost!

This is NOT a dig on Full Sail, just pointing out that the software\cam\pc expense is a very small portion of your total education cost and I would not use that to drive my decision on where to spend my education money.

I have no idea how this compares in value to any other school.

good luck!

This.

I spend 30,000 dollars of money I had saved on my first year of film school. I could have bought enough equipment to start my own small company and learn on my own with that, but I threw it away at film school.

The "free" software and equipment shouldn't be part of the equation. Honestly, you're going to pay WAY more tuition for classes that have nothing to do with filmmaking to get a 'well rounded education.'
