Advice on some effects

Wow! That was pretty cool. Hard to tell. It almost looks practical with prosthetics and puppetry. The first growth reminds me of Super Elastic Bubble Plastic. I'd need to look at it frame by frame because watching in real time there appeared to be some flashes masking jump cuts. It might not be animation at all.

Of course, if it is CGI, then it's anyone's guess as to which program they used. There are several that could achieve this with a lot of work.

Thanks for the link, Vince. I think that was real. The flashes were sparking. I think the only thing that was added was a sound effect at the end.

You could do something like this with hypervoxels in Lightwave. It would be hard to make it look exactly like that, but you could map the HVs onto a morphing set of points so you could control how they formed and make them look like an alien hatchling, or something equally gross.
