These look pretty decent to me.

Personally I would have liked to have seen Blue Valentine and Ryan Gosling nominated in Film/Actor categories...

Also Lesley Manville and Another Year almost totally missing out is a shame.

Portman, Firth and Bale are lock ins, in my opinion, which I think makes Supporting Actress the hardest category to call.

Let's face it, it's a two horse race for the top prize between The Social Network and The King's Speech. I think that The Social Network will take film and director prizes and I think they will both be fully deserved...

8 nominations for the Social Network???? I'll just say i went to the theater to see that with my brother, we were the only ones there, and we left early. If it wasn't about facebook i don't think it would be AS popular as it is, not saying it wouldn't get any buzz, but i think it's hyped up way too much.

as for best picture, I'd like to see Blue Valentine up there, and like clapper said, Ryan Gosling should have gotten a Best Actor nom.

I'm glad i saw all of the best picture noms, except for kings speech and the kids are alright, which i definitely will soon.

if the social network wins best picture, director, or actor. I will give up completely on the oscars.
Although i said the same thing when avatar when best pic over Inglourious Basterds...

I'd like to see Black Swan take award it was nominated for. It will probably only get best actress. I'm really surprised the music wasnt nominated!

Daft Punk didn't get a music nom either :(

I've been slacking, only seen 3 of the best picture nominees. Black Swan, True Grit, and Insucktion. I might try to catch The Fighter this weekend.

I would highly recommend the fighter. I really really enjoyed winters bone also, but part of the reason might be that the movie was essentially set in my small hillbilly farm town. The few shots in the beginning showing the inside of the school, looked identical to my high school. Architecture, lighting, even the kids! It was shocking to me, I've never seen that. The whole time I was watching the movie i felt like it was happening a mile away from me.

Winter's Bone is phenomenal and Jennifer Lawrence was just incredible in this role. I am surprised that it even got a nomination given the public's tendencies to "look away" from these type of people in real life.

Honestly i was pretty surprised to see it on the Oscar list so many times but it really was a great achievement. Not only was Jennifer Lawrence great, but all the supporting cast was jsut as believable.

I think this is one of those 'mood' movies. They wanted to set up a distinct atmosphere, and as someone who see's that kind of town on the daily, they nailed it.

Has anyone seen 'the kids are alright'? i'd like to check it out.

And what's with Toy Story 3 getting the nom for Best Picture AND Best Animated Picture? Why not just stick with the animated nom and throw in a film like Blue Valentine? I don't think it has a great chance to win but it was an amazing movie that deserves the buzz. This is a movie that unfortunately might be forgotten about in 10 years just because know one knows its there. And someone isn't going to pick up a random dvd just because it says '1 academy award nomination'

I'm a little hesitant to see Winter' Bone, just because I'm afraid the sterotypes mixed with warped fetishization of my culture (I grew up in a trailer in rural Tennessee amongst the people this movie is about, in fact they are my family) will piss me off.

I grew up in a trailer in rural West Virginia. My wife grew up in a rural town of 31 people in Wisconsin. My wife, my brother and I all loved this film.

It is a very moody and sad film with a strong female lead. It is very well done and not condescending at all. There may be a few cliches but they are well grounded in reality.

I do intend to see for myself, but most of the negative reviews lead one to believe the only thing missing is the toothless old lady smoking the corncob pipe, and that the tone is too flat, there are NO happy people. Again, just going on reviews, plan on seeing it.

Toy Story 3 definitely deserves an award! It finished the Toy Story saga with a fantastic ending. Tear jerking. It was kind of weird being the only guy crying when I saw it, but whatever.

Inception! Good job!

I am snubbed by the Academy once again.

Man, there's some good flicks there that I have yet to see. Got some NetFlixin' to do.

Why do there have to be happy people in a film? A lot of what we call life is not happy. The tone is flat. It's a somber sad story. The tone fits the film perfectly.

God forbid some film maker steps outside the box and upsets the Hollywood critics. This is the kind of shit that pisses me off. Haven't they figured out that we are tired of the same steaming piles of crap coming out of Hollywood yet? The nomination at least gives me a glimmer of hope that somebody out there somewhere is at least starting to listen.

Because no one, outside those that are or should be on medication, are sad and grim, ALL the time. They laugh, and they have light moments. The people who live in the circumstances like those I am led to believe are depicted also smile, glow at the sight of their children, play with their dog, and do a million other things, because whether educated or not, they are complex people with complex feelings and actions.

Again, I am not going to pass judgement on this movie until I see it, but what I am reading about it leads me to believe I'm going to find it heavy handed, preachy, and probably filled with stereotypes.

Just seen a preview of The Fighter (I know for you Americans it came out in July 2004) so I've now seen 9 out of the 10 Best Film Nominees. I'll see True Grit as soon as it's released over here at the start of February...

I'm not wholly convinced that Winter's Bone deserved its nomination. I would probably have put it in my top ten ahead of 127 Hours, but I don't think it's a terribly special film. I think Jennifer Lawrence's performance was immaculate and deeply affecting but the movie as a whole lacked a little bit of the narrative focus that I associate with really good movies. I enjoyed it all the same, but I do feel as though there have been a handful of better films this year...

Let's have this discussion again after you watch it.
