A decent set of cans (headphones)

Out in the field the other day my current headphones stopped working leaving me stranded. I ended up finishing a shoot using iPod earbuds feeling like a dunce. I went around checking out a few different headphones and came down the sennheiser hd280 which they had in store and sounds great with my tascam. I couldnt come across any info on the hd25 sp 2, or a demo unit for that matter. No one had the Sony 7506 in stock or a reason why the price jump. I used the 7506 before but that was like 10 years ago and I can't recall them, but at the time alot of people were using the akg k240s. My hesitation on the Sony is the price hike that puts them in range of a refurb sennheiser hd25 ii the good ones.

I'm not that picky on brand name or who's using them, I want something that is going to give me true sound and are rugged. I would like them to fold up or travel and be comfortable. My budget is around 100, but I would go higher if its justified, since most good headphones last years . Any thoughts are appreciated.

Am using Bose QC-15 to filter out the ambient sounds and pay attention to my recording.
I know this is a $300 cans, but it's worth it to me. Give it shot and hear the difference.

I like the AKG K240M for studio work, but not in the field, where I prefer the Sony MDR-7506; they're up to about $130 or so. I liked the Sennheiser HD 380 when I had the chance to use them, but at around $200 they're a little pricey.

Just for fun....

I was very impressed with the pistol range style ear protectors that had the MDR-7506 electronics installed in them. They sounded good and I was very isolated from exterior sounds, although they were a bit heavy and a little on the hot side. I also tried a pair that were highly customized with off-set two-way speakers - I can't remember the vendor, but they were absolutely amazing and incredibly expensive, about $400+. Definitely worth it for full time audio pros who do a lot of work in high SPL environments - like Charles Maynes who specializes in weapons recordings. (Sorry, I can't find the bookmark/link for either of them....)

Oh, BTW, as a budget alternative some guys are getting really nice earbuds and wearing traditional ear protectors over them for the isolation. I'm personally very uncomfortable with earbuds, but it does sound okay. Some food for thought...

I know the ones your talking about. The basic ones are about 300. Which made me remember Sony sells the drivers seperately someone with good soldering skills can make a pair on the cheap. I digress, so the sony's are a better bet? Although I will look into the audio technica ones too.
