3D... without the glasses

I've seen a couple like these on tumblr, pretty cool. ^.^
It's not 3D exactly, they just use a lens that gives barrel distortion. Or so it looks like to me.
It's a rack focus and some middle ground spatial references… these are the tricks filmmakers have been using to fake 3D in a 2D image for decades… I personally appreciate that the old tricks are being presented as a new technique. This is something that can be done in camera.
Play in "Z-Space." this shows depth in the frame. Use the point of focus to draw the audiences attention. This image does it REALLY well.
