Hey all, we've just got about 1 week left for this Open Call and so far we've only got about 30 pitches. That means that if you've got an awesome idea, now is the time to get it in because your chances are pretty good to get 2000 bucks to make it.
Good luck everybody, and I look forward to...
It looks like, unfortunately, you have to be a legal resident of the US to submit. (I had to check the guidelines to make sure, and believe me, I don't make these rules -- that sucks!) And while I realize the point is sorta moot now, I think we're hoping to get a range of entries about...
Hey everybody,
I haven't been around much lately (it's been busy at the Lab, I'll try to swing by more often!) but I wanted to drop in and let everyone know that the WGBH Lab, in assocation with P.O.V. just launched a new Open Call. Here's the standard copy: (I wouldn't want to deprive you all...
Hey all,
Wanted to drop in and let everyone know that the WGBH Lab has posted the user-created shorts submitted to us for our latest call on caregiving. We got some great short-form documentaries in there! If you have a chance, head over to the site, register (it takes about 3 seconds) and drop...
Hey, I just wanted to drop in and comment on something that was said.. well I guess it was said last year. This is sort of beside the point but you practically never need to 'defrag' your hard drive with a Mac. Macs defrag the hard drive on the fly as files are written, so apps like iDefrag are...
I think it's worth noting that while a 14-year-old wrote and starred.. she most certainly did not direct it. ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0298120/ ). Which sort of makes the whole thing make a bit more sense in terms of how it got made.
Hey all,
Just wanted to let everyone know that the deadline for the open call has been extended to February 29th. So get your short docs in now for a chance at $1,000 and national broadcast!

Hey everybody,
Check out the final cuts of the docs for the WGBH Lab's "Eviction Notice" open call. Filmmakers spent a few months making these, drop 'em some feedback while you're there!

Not to split hairs here, but I just wanted to point out that Laptop screens use dithering to achieve the "millions" of colors that desktop displays do natively. Apple was recently sued over this very issue and that's what I was talking about (...
An external monitor is a great idea if you're doing video editing. It's lovely to have an external screen to look at to preview your cuts in full screen without switching into that mode (Lord knows cuts play differently at different sizes!). It is also, as someone else pointed out, going to be...
While the glossy's going to be "flashier," and you really should never color-correct on a laptop because laptop screens do not have the depth of color that a video monitor does, the matte will give you a much more color-accurate look than the glossy, which amps up the colors a bit.
I, personally, would not recommend editing HD on a G4 machine. If you can get your hands on an Intel Mac, go with that. I'm just not sure that a G4 has the processing power to handle HD in any usable capacity.
